Photos and results now available for the South Yorkshire CC League 1 at Clifton Park, Rotherham Sunday, 23rd October
A dry and fast course, despite the twists and turns, saw 17 SRC athletes line up for the first of the four league races.
The Ladies race over 5km saw Jenny Horne work her way through the field to finish 10th in 19.57 behind Sheffield University's Poppy Blake who was a comfortable winner. Strong runs from Cat Taylor (24th in 21.17), Laura Inglis (28th in 21.46), Maz Whittle (23rd in 27.11) and Bev Baker (84th in 29.07) gave the girls a promising start to the series.
The Men's race was a tale of youth versus experience with Will Beauchamp storming off before tying up on the second lap. Chris Ireland spotted the opportunity and worked his way past Will before suffering himself as Will retook Chris with 2 miles left to finish 24th in 30.19 for the 8km course. Chris was 28th in 30.35 not far ahead of Trevor Neville who will be pleased with his 34th place in 31.23 as he worked his way through the field. Shaun Wright tracked Trevor all the way, just 15 seconds behind in 34th, with Jed Turner a strong 44th in 32.12 chasing hard once again on the heels of Doncaster's Mick Page.
Good to see Ian A-B working his way back from injury for 61st in 33.39 followed by Gary Baker (65th in 34.01). Ever reliable Gary Podmore will be pleased with his 34.52 for 79th, followed by Craig Burrows' 35.36 for 87th. Steve Davison's debut on the country gained him a respectable 36.08 for 93rd, and Joan P-L showed a return to racing with 37.28 for 112th. Nigel Kent toed the line for his first CC race in years but posted a dnf – better luck at Wentworth Castle in the next race Nigel.
It was a pleasing start to our quest for promotion basck to the First Division, although our turnout at the next race will affected by the clash with the High Peak Relay
