Ensure that you are healthy enough to start running. If in any doubt, contact your doctor. If you are a female, try and arrange to run with someone rather than on your own (i.e. safety in numbers).Learn to read your body signs. If you feel listless it is usually a precursor to an illness. If yu experience twinges and they get worse, get them checked out. A physio or doctor is useful in diagnosing the problem. If possible, always let someone know the route you will be running and approximately how long you will be out running. Never do more than your body is capable of coping with, so resist the urge to overtrain. It is better to train to a “comfortable” tired state, knowing at the end of the run that the training run could have been harder and longer but that you are able and ready for your next run without physical problems.
